Founding of Be A Bookworm

Recognizing that many children in Orange County, California do not have adequate access to books, Steve and Kathy Allison donated about 250 children’s books to an operator of homeless shelters and transitional housing facilities in 2019. Within a year, we had given over 1,500 children’s books to other community service centers, and we were becoming aware of further needs. We formed Be A Bookworm in 2021 to expand our book-giving programs. We provide children’s books that inspire, that recognize cultural diversity, teach positive values, and encourage the love of reading. Be A Bookworm has applied for 501 (c) (3) nonprofit public benefit charity status, and is run entirely by volunteers. We operate in areas of Orange County where need is the greatest.
